Force India have today announced a long term deal has been struck, meaning that the team will run Mercedes engines and KERS units (plus all other associated ancillary) for 2014 and beyond. The deal is unsurprising considering the recent appointment of Adrian Sutil who famously has links with the German engine supplier.
Mercedes have supplied Force India with engines since 2009, yet this partnership was under review considering the evolutionary engine regulations which will play a focal part of the 2014 season. However, Mercedes are renowned for producing excellent engine units and Force India will have been well aware of this.
It was expected that the team would continue their Mercedes partnership due to Adrian Sutil's strong connection with the outfit. This link was no-doubt a huge factor in the team's decision to sign him over young star Jules Bianchi.
"Our new agreement with Mercedes-Benz for the coming years is the most significant in the history of Sahara Force India," said Vijay Mallya. "With new powertrain regulations being introduced next year, I can't think of a better partner to work with as Formula One enters a new and exciting era. The agreement gives us the long-term stability we require and will enable us to continue our journey towards the front of the Formula One grid."
Meanwhile, Mercedes executive director Toto Wolff, exclaimed the team's delight at continuing their long-term partnership with Force India. "It is a significant milestone to announce our first long-term agreement for powertrain supply under the 2014 regulations," said Wolff. Sahara Force India was our first genuine customer in Formula One back in 2009 and we are delighted to enter an expanded, long-term relationship with them from 2014 onwards. This long-term agreement offers excellent value in terms of the balance between price and performance. We hope it will mean Mercedes-Benz and Sahara Force India working together for the entire life cycle of the new powertrain generation."

ReplyDeleteLeaving aside the financial woes of the owners which repeatedly gets a lot of publicity, credit must be given to Force India for the strides they have made. They seem to be making good decisions both on the investments to support techincal development of the team and in the choice of drivers. I do not know if its Mallya’s brain or he listening to his team and funding them, but the team is making good progress. I just hope this deal is yet one more of those good decisions.

Yeah. I completely agree. I think that extending the Mercedes deal will turn out to be a good decision, as the team will not have to form a new relationship with a different engine supplier at this crucial time. Regardless, Mercedes are still the strongest engine supplier in the field.
