As the Formula One spectrum continues to broaden its horizons, Thailand could be one of the latest additions to the calender in 2015. Yesterday, the officials took one further step towards securing their first Grand Prix, by mapping out a route around the streets of Bangkok.
The Sports Authority of Thailand confirmed that a finalized route has been established, passing many of the cities most famous landmarks, including the Grand Palace, Victory Monument, and the Temple Of Dawn. The circuit would be yet another street circuit to enter the calender, joining the most illustrious circuits such as Monaco and Albert Park.
Thailand's sporting governor, Kanokphand Chulakasem, said: "As the starting and finishing point would be on the bank of the Chao Phraya River, we may be able to build the main stands in the river. It would also be convenient for transportation of equipment. Only a small group of residents would be affected by the proposed route."
Bangkok has been on the motorsport radar for a while now. The city hosted the Race Of Champions event in December, entertaining drivers of the caliber of Micheal Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and the eventual winner, Romain Grosjean. Chulakasem has also suggested that the route has the capabilities of holding 150,000 spectators. The future of motorsport in Bangkok is very promising.
